Find What You Love To Do!

This article was inspired by Steve Jobs. During a commencement address in 2005 he told the graduating class “find what you love to do”. Think of it, you spend a large portion of your waking hours at work. Steve offered great advice when he said “You’ve got to find what you love. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work.”

How do you go about finding what you love to do?

  1. Make a list of your skills and interests in two columns and make sure to write them down. List everything you perceive your skills to be. This could include anything, for example speaking, writing, persuasion, teaching, etc.  Then on the other column list your interests, they can include things that you are knowledgeable about.  For example your list can include computers, helping others, hiking, tennis, etc. Think about what you are interested in your current/previous job and what you are not interested in as well. You can ask friends and family members what skills and interests they see in you. Look at how you spend your time and what you enjoy doing. Think of your accomplishments and what skills and interests revolved around them.  The reason for doing this is to leverage your strengths. You have to love what you do and that is why it is important to look what you enjoy. You may find that your skills and interests gravitate toward a few areas.
  2. Next set aside time to focus and ask yourself what you love to do by asking the right questions. Write it down so that you can make connections you have never thought of.  It also allows you to free your mind for new thoughts.  Then ask yourself “what would I like to do on a daily basis utilizing my skills and interests that would bring value to others?”  Look at the list that you just wrote and start writing down answers. You may want to focus on ideas that combine your skills and interests that you listed first. They are probably your strongest skills and interests. Write down whatever comes to mind and sooner or later you will piece things together to arrive at your answer.
  3. You will know when you have arrived at your answer. It will make you feel good and you will have a gut feeling about it. You will feel passionate about it and willing to overcome obstacles to pursue it.

As Steve Jobs said “the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle.”
